Miniature American Shepherd Puppies Leaving Momma…When is the Right Time?

    Posted: January 8, 2012 by admin   -   1 Comment

We just had our first litter of Miniature American Shepherd puppies and as we where looking for GREAT homes for our puppies I noticed one common questions. “When is it the best time for a mini aussie puppy to leave their momma and be placed in their new home? The answer is 12 weeks.

If you read articles online people will say 6 weeks. Some say 8 weeks others will say 10 weeks while a different group claim 12 weeks is the best. After working with our first litter of puppies and seeing how they have progressed from 6 weeks to 12 weeks I would have to say 12 weeks is the best time. And I’m not just saying this because I have two puppies left.

My wife and I started marketing and placing our puppies at 10 weeks. Between 10 to 12 weeks we found GREAT  homes for six of our miniature aussies. At 10 weeks I remember comenting to my wife that people that say at 6 to 8 weeks is ok were making a Big mistake. At 10 weeks the puppies started play fighting, running and jumping with their parents. The amount of learning they received from 10 till 12 weeks was HUGE.

I understand the new owners want the puppies when they are young and the breeded wants to start marketing and placing puppies as soon as they can. But the last two weeks are well worth the wait. Chime in on this topic and let me know if you agree or disagree.
